No Digital in RTÉ licence

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

ComReg is required to issue a licence to the RTÉ Authority for the transmission of
its programme services under the Broadcasting Authority Act 1960 as amended.
The Licence must also conform, with the new EU regulatory framework.
In summary:

The Licence permits the transmission of RTÉ radio and television
services. (2005 – 2012)

The Licence is being renewed for analogue broadcasting only and does
not allow for digital broadcasting.

so RTÉ will do digital stuff in the next 7 years but it will not be covered in their licence, I have a TV licence, I can’t get decent analogue signal in suburban Dublin, I watch digital BBC as the snow on RTÉ 1 & 2 is so bad. Their is little chance RTÉ on astra2D will go FTA. There is little interest in DTT. Time for a pirate explosion, that forced RTÉ into Radio 2 and FM late 70’s.

So what I plan to do, and you heard it first here, Broadcast a DRM station on 1278khz to the Beaumont area. To start with I will just broadcast a test tone ala the jamming, and then apply for the non existent licence, and then start the stereo AM service with text & picture.. Anyone interested.

Microsoft and Viagra maker Phizer have teamed up to sue Viagra spammers.

It was announced yesterday that Microsoft and Pfizer will become partners to slow down the Viagra spam that MSN users receive.

all legal attempts to slow down spam are failing, what is needed is a technology solution to slow it down, I don’t endorse kangaroo court systems that are blacklists, no one anti spam tool can keep the waves of spam out, we need to address the openness that made email the killer app, the ability to send millions of bulk emails needs to be licenced, known providers of bulk mail solutions should work with MTA creators and ISPs to allow preferred emails to be carried on the open internet with protocol enhancements while unlicenced bulk email should carry second class stamps that delay and divert the delivery of spam before it hits your procmail, spam filter and inbox.

Dublin to have new TV station by mid-2005

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has awarded a licence for a new television station for Dublin, to be called City Channel, which could be broadcasting by the summer. Backed by media entrepreneur David Harvey and a group of as-yet-unnamed investors, the station will initially be available to some 90,000 homes via the NTL digital platform. It will offer commercial and sponsored
programmes and raise revenues through sponsorship, advertising and premium text services. Mr Harvey said that City Channel will target areas which are not covered by rival broadcasters, such as property, motoring, shopping and local politics. [source Professional Ireland - emigrant Publications]

Oh good, the BCI give Dublin a new station, only
it turns out the format is shopping channel, infomercial 1.50 txt shite TV. What about a TV station that filmed real Dublin people, their voices opinions, their families, lives, hobbies. Reality TV, real people doing things for the stay at home zappers to watch. Perhaps Harvey will do a special Frank Sinatra Show! with a CD box set on sale during the breaks? come off it BCI/IRTC, your creator Rambo Burke is lying in prison in Dublin 7, and you feel this is the best you can do. Lets move the BCI up the post revolution to do list.

Digital Radio Mondiale

The DRM on-air system will propel the AM broadcasting bands below 30 MHz ? short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave – to the next level.

DRM is the only universal, non-proprietary digital AM radio system with near-FM quality sound available to markets worldwide.

The quality of DRM audio is excellent, and the improvement upon analogue AM is immediately noticeable. DRM can be used for a range of audio content, including multi-lingual speech and music.

Besides providing near-FM quality audio, the DRM system has the capacity to integrate data and text. This additional content can be displayed on DRM receivers to enhance the listening experience.

“Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) a wake up call for radio” says BHG
