The same thing happens to me and I'm going to log in to read stuff from people I don't know. Bebo is feeling the pressure from Facebook because Facebook has camped out in the place Bebo would most like to occupy. And you're right--the only way Bebo will enjoy exponential growth is by opening up, allowing widgets and generating RSS feeds.
