from the pages of the Irish Emigrant
15 years ago this week from December 28, 1992: Negotiations on the
formation of a new government had been suspended for Christmas; I
tried to explain Irish politics for the uninitiated; Dick Spring gave
evidence to the Beef Tribunal; and there was extensive media coverage
of the estimated 400,000 emigrants who had returned home for
Christmas.

stupid wars

Monday, July 30th, 2007

91 years ago this month 19,240 British Soldiers died on day one of the Battle of the Somme. 58,000+ US soldiers died in the Vietnam War and millions died from the other side. This makes the Iraq war numbers of dead look small. My grandfather was in the Battle of the Somme, and made it home to Ireland. 10 million+ dead in WWI; 62 million+ died in WW2. stupid men go to stupid wars. I am no historian, but it must have taken a lot of support from the allies over the years to let fascism rise in Europe before war seemed a sensible solution to the power hungry leaders of the day.

Did the CIA prop up the Iranians they liked? did they deal with Sadam? did they fund Osama and the mudjahadeen ? YES. Cash for weapons food for oil or cashing in on investments.. war is dirty.. but the ’stupid’ men were up to their necks in it long before Gavrilo Princip killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
