Politics: 09.07.2003 Howth Residents force Council to backtrack on Edros rezoning
Socialist Party representative for Dublin North East, Brian Greene, wholeheartedly welcomed the decision of Fingal County Council to defer any decision on the Edros site and to include the lands as part of the overall development of Howth in the new County development plan.
Mr. Greene said, " this is a great victory for people power and a testament to the local community who left Councillors of Fingal in no doubt that the plan proposed for Edros would not be tolerated now or in the future."
He added ?While acknowledging today?s important victory, we cannot be complacent. There is no doubt that this proposal is likely to come back again. The preparations for the new County Development Plan are now underway and this is the opportunity for communities to put a halt to bad planning and unusual re-zonings by getting involved in the process now.?
Mr. Greene who organised a public information meeting on the issue, and was to the forefront in organising the opposition, said ?this should give all the communities of Fingal confidence to get organised?. And he paid tribute to Mr. Bill McCormick of the Save Howth Library committee ?who?s members worked tirelessly to stop the decimation of Howth village by this fallen re-zoning?.
?The efforts of the people of Howth has shown that communities demand more accountable representation at local level, and that the apparatus of the Council must act in the best interest of the people it serves.?
